National Drug Prevention Advisory Committee

The National Drug Prevention Advisory Committee (NDPAC) is a senior-level advisory committee co-chaired by Health Canada and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA). The committee provides guidance for the development, implementation and evaluation of the national youth drug prevention mass media campaign led by Health Canada.

About the National Anti-Drug Strategy

The parents drug prevention mass media campaign is part of the Government of Canada's National Anti-Drug Strategy. Led by Justice Canada, this strategy provides a focused approach involving three action plans to deliver on priorities aimed at reducing the supply of and demand for illicit drugs, as well as addressing the crime associated with illegal drugs.

Health Canada's Role

As part of the National Anti-Drug Strategy's Prevention Action Plan, Health Canada is leading the development and implementation of a five-year national youth drug prevention advertising campaign. This campaign provides information for both teens and their parents.

Information, tools and tips for parents have been developed along with advertisements to raise awareness of illicit drugs and empowering parents to talk with their teens about illicit drug use. These resources include,

• Learn more about who is at risk
• Parent TV advertisement
• Parent print advertisement
• Talking with your Teen about Drugs booklet
• Tips on talking with your teenager

In 2009-10 information and advertisements will be developed for youth, to help make them aware of the harms of illicit drugs.
