One Night, One Pill

As an older sister, I worry about my little sister who will be entering high school next year. I remember when I first started high school and the overwhelming pressures that came along with it. As it wasn't too long ago that I was in her shoes, I worry about the pressures she will be faced with such as drugs and the decisions she will make.

I have been offered drugs numerous times in high school and it was very hard to say no, especially when most of my friends were doing it.

I almost gave into the pressure, and one Saturday I told a friend I wanted to try ecstasy. He told me that he and his brother were going to be trying it that night at a friend's house and invited me to tag along. I told him that I couldn't go because I had a soccer game that night and my parents weren't going to let me go out after the game.

That Monday when we returned to class I noticed my friend wasn't at school. I thought nothing of it at the time until my teacher asked to speak with me outside. She told me he was in the hospital.

My friend had overdosed on ecstasy. He didn't overdose because he took too many pills. The pill he took had been incorrectly cut. My friend, who I had just spoken to over the weekend, was in serious condition. I couldn't believe it - I couldn't believe what was happening. After weeks of being in hospital, he was released; however, he wasn't the same person I used to know. He couldn't talk, walk, and feed himself. Due to the overdose, he had suffered severe brain damage and could no longer function like he used to. It's hard to watch, but even harder to watch after knowing who he was before. In just one night I lost a friend. One night, one pill, cost him, his family and friends everything. Since then I have never thought about taking drugs.
